Pharmaceutical inventory at retail can be very unproductive with 20% to 30% of total store level inventory having no current dispensing activity. Carrying this additional inventory adds unnecessary costs and is a poor use of capital. Additionally, the limited customer demand for this unproductive or “dead” inventory will ultimately result in expired and outdated product. Customer service can also be negatively impacted as dollars are invested in inventory with little or no demand instead of faster moving items.
